Clients can be very appreciative of your support, and it feels good to be thanked. A warm “thank you”, a smile, or a card can mean a lot to both you and the client. However, it’s important to remember that the line between appreciation and inappropriate gifting must not be crossed.
What IS OK
- Verbal thanks
- A simple thank-you card
- Genuine appreciation and positive feedback
- A client offering a cup of tea, coffee or some cake over a chat at the end of service
These are expressions of gratitude that don’t create pressure, obligation, or confusion.
What is NOT OK
- Cash of any amount
- Tips
- Loans or offers of money
- Expensive gifts or personal items
- Being included in wills or promises of inheritance
- Hinting or requesting gifts of any kind
These can blur boundaries, create dependency, or put both you and the client at risk — so they must not be accepted.
If you’re offered something on the ‘not ok‘ list, here’s a polite way to decline:
“Thank you so much for your kindness — your words mean a lot. I’m not allowed to accept money or gifts, but your appreciation means everything.”
